County Meet Enters 3rd Week
The football and kickball events, which kicked off the 2009-10 National County Sports Meet, continue on December 20, with participating counties set to undo each other for the quarter finals, slated to take place in Monrovia, beginning January 10. 2010.
This weekend’s fixture brings to the fore all four groups of the meet to feature in duels at five venues.
In Group A, Margibi and Maryland, who both won their opening games against defending football champs Bomi, will meet in what appears to be a tough clash at the Nancy Doe Sports pitch in Kakata. A win will improve either side’s chances of making it to Monrovia.
In the same group, out of contention champions Bomi host Montserrado in Tubmanburg, in the latter’s first game of the tournament, and in what seems to be a farewell match for the Blue Lake Boys. Montserrado must secure a win, to mount any chase after Maryland and Margibi, but it remains to be seen whether the defending champs will bow out without a victory.
Nimba, who boast of leadership in Group B, after winning a protest against Grand Gedeh for fielding an illegal player in their opening game, will travel to Robertsport to face Grand Cape Mount, who got a vital away win at River Gee last weekend. Last year’s runners up River Gee gets the last opportunity to play at home on Sunday when they welcome Grand Geded in Fish Town.
In Group C, Lofa, in the driver’s seat after scoring a protest victory over Rivercess for using an illegal player, will travel to meet Gbarpolu in Bopolu.
The protest benefit means Lofa are through to the next round of the competition, but they will be hoping to get maximum points to top their group of three. Rivercess will be wishing for Lofa to do just that with a 3 – 0 win. This will send the boys from Cestos to Monrovia with ease. Any result other than such a score line will deny them a place in the next round.
Group D leaders Grand Bassa, after beating Sinoe away last weekend, look set to make it two win out of two when they host third place holders Grand Kru at the Doris Williams Sports Ground in Buchanan.
For Grand Kru, a win will earn them the group’s leadership, following their goalless draw with Bong on the opening day of the tournament, on December 6,
All football games will be preceded by kickball matches (see fixture below).
The remaining disciplines of the competition: Basketball, Volleyball, and Track & Field, will commence alongside the quarter finals of the football and kickball games.
