Famous Upcountry Basketball Tournament to kick-off in November

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has disclosed that the 2018 Harold Emmet McGown Up-country Basketball Tournament will commence this  November in Gbarnga City, Bong County.

The Chairman of the Tournament, Mr. Kesselee K. Kanneh said the event will kick-off at the William V.S. Tubman Gray Gymnasium in Gbarnga City, Bong County, from November 8-11, 2018, in both male and female categories.

Mr. Kanneh said the Tournament is expected to bring together 10 high schools, including 2 female basketball teams from five counties.

He identified the host Tubman Gray High School and St. Martin of Bong County, WP.L. Brumskine of Grand Bassa County, Ganta United Methodist and Bishop Carroll High from Nimba County, Zorzor Central High and Lutheran Training Institution of Lofa County and C.H. Dewey High School of Bomi County.

While the female category will bring together 2 All Star Teams from participating Institutions in the Tournament for exhibition games 

According to the organizing Committee Chairman, the honoree Harold McGowan along some former basketball stars of the American NBA, the Embassy of the United States of America, the High ranking personalities of the Government of Liberia among others are expected to grace this year’s tournament.

This sporting festival was initiated in the early 1970’s to help promote the game among high schools of the central region, which then comprised of Bong, Lofa and Nimba Counties.

Renamed the McGowan Basketball Tournament in 2012, in honor of Harold Emmet McGowan, a former American Peace Corps member who dedicated 20 years of voluntary service to the development of basketball in Liberia, the competition aims to serve as a catalyst for academic excellence and growth of the sport at the national level.
